Are Energy Drinks Unregulated and Out of Control?

Monster. Rock Star. Red Bull. Full Throttle. Go to any convenience store, and these are the names of several energy drinks that you’ll find staring back at you through the cooler’s glass doors. They are also the same drinks that have become wildly popular among young adults. But the concern is that these drinks are also gaining popularity with teens and young kids, which is a trend that has both health officials and parents concerned – and for good reason.
A recent study from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston showed that a typical energy drink has as much caffeine as one cup of coffee and contains a quarter-cup of sugar. Now, a regular cup of coffee and four tablespoons of sugar may not sound too shocking to some people, but when mixed with other ingredients such as alcohol, the combination can be dangerous, if not lethal.
Excessive caffeine consumption in children can cause elevated heart rates, hypertension, anxiety, headaches and interrupted sleep patterns. But what has the medical community most concerned, are the unregulated herbal stimulants and natural blends often not mentioned on the labels. I’m talking about ingredients like taurine, guarana, creatine and B-vitamins.
To be fair, most of these herbs and vitamins have been studied and are used in both traditional and integrative medicine, but their effects when combined with high concentrations of caffeine are still widely unknown. And because many energy drinks are marketed as dietary supplements, the limit that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires on the caffeine content of soft drinks – 71 milligrams per 12-ounce can – does not apply to them, so they often contain amounts that can be dangerous for children and adults with certain medical conditions.
Here’s a closer look at some of these herbs and vitamins:
Taurine: A natural amino acid produced by the body that supports neurological development and helps regulate heart beat and muscle contractions. It’s found naturally in meat, fish and breast milk, but it can also be found in supplement form. Some studies suggest it can enhance athletic performance, but little is known about the long-term effects of taurine supplementation.
Ginseng: A root thought to have several medicinal properties, including reducing stress, boosting energy levels and libido, improving memory and concentration.
B-vitamins: Include thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), cyanocobalamin (B12), folic acid and biotin. These vitamins help to convert sugar to energy and improve muscle tone.
Guarana: The fruit of a small shrub native to Brazil, guarana seeds contain twice the amount of caffeine found in coffee beans.
Carnitine: An amino acid that helps the body convert fat into energy. It’s produced by the body in the liver and kidneys and stored in the skeletal muscles, heart, brain and sperm.
Citicoline: A brain chemical that occurs naturally in the body. Citicoline supplements are thought to increase phosphatidylcholine, which is important for brain function. It may also help decrease tissue damage when the brain is injured.
Creatine: An organic acid that helps supply energy for muscle contractions.
Inositol: A member of the vitamin B complex (but not a vitamin itself) that helps relay messages within cells.
Ginkgo biloba: Has been extensively studied and used in traditional medicine to treat circulatory disorders and enhance memory.

10 Reasons Why Microsoft Should Buy Facebook:

when it announced its messaging platform, which combines the functionality of e-mail with the quick communication possibilities afforded in SMS and IM. The goal is not necessarily to make Facebook Messages a direct e-mail competitor to services such as Gmail. But the company believes its social platform can supplant the existing services with its quick communications alternatives.
With that announcement, Facebook has proved that it has big plans for the Internet. And it wants to be a Web platform that does more than help people find out what their high school buddies are up to. By doing so, it has also made itself far more attractive. The company has massive potential going forward. And with the possibility of more than 500 million active users employing its messaging platform, the future could be extremely bright.
That's precisely why Microsoft should consider buying Facebook. Yes, it might seem improbable and the chances of it happening could be slim. But Microsoft has boatloads of cash and investments on its books—over $44 billion as of the third quarter—and can legitimately get its hands on Facebook if it wants to. There are sound reasons why it should want to. Read on to find out why:
1. The size is obvious
Perhaps the best reason for Microsoft to acquire Facebook is that the social network is the world's top destination in the world. It has more than 500 million active users who share over 30 billion pieces of content every single month. It's huge and it's growing. It would only make sense for Microsoft to want to capitalize on that growth and find a way to generate serious revenue off of it.
2. They're already working closely
Microsoft is already working its way into Facebook. Bing is a key partner with Facebook, powering the company's Web results in its Search. The social network also announced Oct. 13 that when folks search for content on Bing (or Facebook's Search), they will see their friends' "faces next to Web pages they've liked." It's an interesting implementation. And it makes it all the more reason for Microsoft to get its hands on Facebook.
3. It owns a part of Facebook
Microsoft currently owns a small part of Facebook. Back in 2007, Microsoft doled out $240 million to Facebook in return for a 1.6 percent stake in the company. That might not be much, but Microsoft has its foot in the door, and it's a good basis from which to start negotiations if the software giant were to ever go through with it.
4. Microsoft has the financial security to do it
When it comes to financial security, Microsoft has it. The company currently has more than $44 billion in cash and short-term investments on its books. During the last quarter, it generated a profit of more than $5.4 billion. With that in mind, it can acquire Facebook using both cash and some stock and not have to worry about the long-term financial impact it might have. After all, if it continues to generate such a profit, it won't be long before its coffers are filled back up again.

French paedophile arrested in Chennai

53-year-old Eric Martin alias Jack Fernandes had gained entry into India through Nepal and was staying in Madhavaram in Chennai. He had been on the run ever since he was convicted in France and was on Interpol's Wanted list.

Martin was produced at the home of a district Magistrate in Saidapet on Wednesday morning and has been remanded to Puzhal prison for 15 days.

The Interpol in Delhi has also been informed and they are expected take action in 3-4 days.

Meanwhile, Chennai CB CID is probing charges of his illegal entry into India. The investigating officers are also talking to Nepal and Sri Lankan High Command as Martin held extended visas in both countries.

They will submit a separate report on whether there is enough evidence to file a case of cognizable offense against Martin in India.

iTunes Beatles storm charts on first day of sale

More than 40 years after the Beatles broke up, their entire catalogue is finally available to download, song by song, through iTunes. And which tracks are most popular with Fab Four fans in the UK? Not Yesterday, I Want to Hold Your Hand or even Strawberry Fields. British music-lovers are double-clicking their love for Hey Jude, Twist and Shout, and Let It Be.
At the time of writing, Beatles songs have been available as legitimate paid downloads for just under a day. And already the Fab Four occupy 15% of iTunes UK's top 200. Although their highest entry, Hey Jude, is at No 40 they have 31 appearances in the charts. A few of these are doubles because some tracks are available on both albums and compilations – Twist and Shout appears at 59 and 79, for instance, and Let It Be at 65 and 147 – but it's clear that people aren't just buying Beatles songs by the album, or as a £125 set. Forget Abbey Road's medley – the public wants Here Comes the Sun and Come Together. Nevermind Yesterday – I Saw Her Standing There and Eleanor Rigby are in hotter demand.
The sentimental Blackbird is the Beatles' fifth-highest entry, but it's encouraging to see lesser-known tracks such as Hey Bulldog and You've Got to Hide Your Love Away appearing above The Long and Winding Road. Phil Spector will be rolling in his prison cell.
Despite this mop-top cheerleading, it's not just the Beatles who have appeared in the iTunes charts. The Rolling Stones are there too. Whether it's nostalgia or coincidence, Gimme Shelter is at No 81. The song isn't new, reissued or the subject of a major Apple announcement. People just like it a lot. And this, in the long run, matters more than any press release.
The Beatles in iTunes UK's top 200:
40 Hey Jude
59 Twist and Shout
65 Let It Be
77 Here Comes the Sun
79 Twist and Shout
97 Blackbird
98 In My Life
99 I Saw Her Standing There
101 Come Together
109 A Day in the Life
123 Hey Jude
125 Help!
128 Eleanor Rigby
146 I Am the Walrus
147 Let It Be
154 Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds
155 A Hard Day's Night
158 Yesterday
160 Hey Bulldog
163 While My Guitar Gently Weeps
171 Yesterday
172 You've Got to Hide Your Love Away

Harry Potter's Emma Watson is moving on: After 10 years of having her life consumed by Harry Potter, new adventures lie ahead

Poised and self-assured, Emma Watson is the essence of her Hermione Granger character -- minus the long hair and the magic spells.
At a Claridge's hotel suite in London, Watson, sporting her new pixie haircut, fields Harry Potter questions with a wit and charm beyond her 20 years. But she's always been ahead of the curve, even as a child thespian.
She only had school plays on her resume when she first took on the demanding role of Hermione in 2001's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the debut movie of the popular J.K. Rowling fantasy series.
Seven films later, Watson's a veteran of a record-setting franchise about to wind up with the much-anticipated release of The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 on Friday and Part 2 set to open July 15.
Directed by David Yates from a Steve Kloves screenplay, Part 1 has Harry, Hermione and Ron escaping from the compromised Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry after the Death Eaters gain control.
The trio's goal is to destroy the Horcrux devices and locate a weapon that will defeat the menacing Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), who is determined to eliminate Harry.
The latest adventure just might be the most thrilling yet, and definitely the most demanding acting exercise for Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson.
As it is, Watson has already decided on her post-Potter phase. Unlike her mates, she's taking a break from the film industry to garner a post-secondary education at the Ivy league Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
But that doesn't mean she's giving up acting. It's more like taking a well-deserved break after a decade of growing up on sets.
The daughter of British lawyers Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson, Watson moved from Paris to Oxfordshire, England, with her mother following her parents' divorce.
She enrolled in the Oxford branch of the Stagecoach Theatre arts program, where she excelled at singing, dancing and acting. She had performed in many amateur productions, but never anticipated the success that would follow.
Watson discusses that and more during an easygoing chat:
Q: How have you managed to keep the media exposure in perspective?
A: It's experience. I'm 20 now and I was nine or 10 when I went into my first press conference. You learn that it takes too much emotional energy to get upset every time something is said you don't like.
Q: Do you get hassled by the American media at Brown University?
A: I'm much more anonymous in the States. I just needed a change. I needed a fresh start, somewhere I could go and feel like I could reinvent myself.
Q: Will you stay on in the U.S.?
A: I could very easily see myself splitting my time between New York and London.
Q: In Deathly Hallows, you are outside of the Hogwarts' domain. Was that odd?
A: You know what? It was so nice not having that whole infrastructure. It can become quite stilted. It was nice for it to be the three of us.
Q: How difficult was the sequence showing Hermione getting Mudblood written on her with Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) by her side?
A: It was very weirdly affecting and quite horrible. I think even Helena didn't like it.
Q: But rumour has it that you came up with the idea. True?
A: It was something Helena and I came up with. We thought it would be more powerful to physically see the pain than do a spell.
Q: And Harry and Hermione kiss in one dream sequence. Radcliffe claims you are quite the fiery kisser. Is he right?
A: The vision had to disturb Ron, so it had to be passionate. But I think he (Daniel) called me an animal in an interview. (Smiling.) I guess I should take it as a compliment.
Q: The dance sequence featuring Hermione and Harry is less intense. Could Radcliffe manage the choreography?
A: As much as I love Dan (Radcliffe), he's not a naturally gifted dancer. But it was perfect for the scene. It was meant to look silly and spontaneous.
Q: The opening sequence recalling Hermione's parents seemed emotionally raw. Was it?
A: I don't want to get too heavy, but being from a family that's been split up, I know what it's like. I guess I used some of that.
Q Was it difficult to wrap the films last summer?
A: I feel like I've answered this question a million times and it never gets easier. I still don't really know how I feel about it. I'm still processing.
Q: Do you have mixed emotions?
A: I feel very sad and I have days where I'm so excited.
Q: Excited?
A: My life revolved around Harry Potter. That was the focal point of my existence, and it's exciting now that I have this time to think and accept other things.

Sonia, PM may play wedding politics: DMK crisis

After forcing the DMK’s hand and getting A Raja to step down as telecom minister, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi are likely to attend the wedding reception of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s grandson, Dhayanidhi Alagiri, in Madurai on November 18. The move is being seen as an attempt to soothe and reaffirm ties with the southern partner.
Congress sources on Monday said both Sonia and Singh were scheduled to travel to Tamil Nadu to attend the ceremony on Thursday. Dhayanidhi is the son of Union Chemical and Fertilisers Minister M Alagiri. Accompanied by DMK leaders T R Baalu, Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran and Tamil Nadu Deputy CM M K Stalin, Alagiri had handed personal invites to the two last month.
The trip assumes importance as it will provide an opportunity to the Congress leadership to remove misperceptions as a fallout of Raja’s resignation.

Significantly, the indication that the two leaders would meet Karunanidhi this week came even as Singh today opted to hand over additional charge of the Telecom Ministry to HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, instead of letting another DMK nominee in the Union Cabinet take charge. Sibal now has Science and Technology as well as Telecom to look after besides HRD.
However, Congress sources said not much should be read into the decision, asserting that the move was a temporary arrangement till the next reshuffle of the Union Cabinet, which could take some time.
The Congress, in fact, sought to put an end to the matter of Raja’s resignation by refusing to entertain questions on it. “There is a probe process on. The CAG report has to be tabled in Parliament. Let the process be complete,” party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters. He added that Raja had already responded on why he had taken the decision to step down.
Meanwhile, the DMK, which did not appear to have been informed about the move to shift the Telecom portfolio to the Congress kitty for now, did not seem to take exception. Suggesting that it could be a “stop gap arrangement”, the DMK parliamentary party leader, T R Baalu, was quoted by PTI as saying: “No one has any say on the issue except the Prime Minister. As such, our leader (M Karunanidhi) has not given any name to succeed Raja to the Prime Minister”.

Harry Potter Final Movie Will Be "Like a War Film"

LONDON (Reuters) - If "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" felt less frenetic than many fantasy blockbusters, then it was the calm before the storm.
Cast and crew of the hugely successful film franchise have described Deathly Hallows Part 2 -- the eighth and last installment in the boy wizard series due out next July -- as a war movie. And unlike Part 1, it will also be in 3-D.
"In Harry Potter 7 (Deathly Hallows Part 1) ... people keep talking about 'Oh it's an action movie' (but) ... this is so sedate compared to what the next one is going to be like," said British actor Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry Potter.
"The next film, because you've had all the plot set up already, you can just kind of enjoy the insanity of all the action," the 21-year-old told Reuters in an interview.
"The last movie is going to be really, really fast paced and a load of action in it and it is like a war film."
Rupert Grint, who plays Harry's best friend Ron, added:
"Some of the scenes where you've got all the hospital beds and piles of bodies everywhere -- it's really a whole new level for a Harry Potter film. It's going to be epic."
Hollywood studio Warner Bros. decided to divide the seventh and last Potter book by author J.K. Rowling into two films.
Part 1, released in cinemas on Friday but screened to critics and journalists already, follows Harry, Ron and Hermione on their mission to find and destroy the Horcruxes -- the keys to evil Lord Voldemort's immortality.
"CHAOS" ON SET
While there is still plenty of action in Part 1, the actors said they were given more time to explore their characters.
"If we had done this book in one film, the stuff that would have got cut is most of this film," said Radcliffe.
"For me that is the most interesting part of the story, because it's where the characters develop and change.
"My pitch (for Parts 1 and 2) was that it's a road movie that turns into a heist movie that turns into a war film."

Facebook Intros Messaging Platform: Careful, It's Not E-mail

Facebook’s e-mail isn’t really e-mail. That is the story, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg (News - Alert). In fact, as posted in a Business Insider piece, the new messaging system unveiled today is a slightly different version of e-mail.
Andrew Bosworth, director of engineering for Facebook (News - Alert), refers to the new system as IM with e-mail layered in. The three components: seamless messaging; conversation history; and social inbox.
With seamless messaging, you can easily be reached anytime and anywhere, though e-mail, SMS or IM. The conversation history allows all conversations to be in one long stream that can be kept for eternity. The social inbox allows you to filter based on your friends through options such as messages, other and spam.
Another Business Insider report takes these key elements a step further, calling the seamless message the “next evolution of Messages.” This feature allows you to determine how you will talk to specific contacts, based on preferences. The platform will remember those preferences and when you begin to type, will send the messages through that channel.
Every Facebook user who wants an @facebook.com e-mail address can have one. This will allow users to share with friends over e-mail, whether they are logged in to Facebook or not. There are no subject lines, no cc, bcc and you can send a message by hitting the enter key, indicating this is not e-mail.
The conversation history allows the user to organize conversations primarily around people. All messages with a specific person will be kept together in one place – regardless of the channel of exchange. Everything can be viewed as a single conversation.
The social inbox is perhaps the coolest feature of all new Facebook e-mail features – I mean, messaging features. You no longer have to have the e-mail message from your best friend sandwiched between a bill and a bank statement. Messages that are not from sources you designate as friends will be sent to the “Other” folder so you can look at them separately.
This week, expect a number of different announcements from companies like Facebook and Google (News - Alert) as this week marks the start of the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco. There, these two heavyweights are expected to lock horns in the battle for dominance over the financial opportunities of dominating the Internet.

Jessica Simpson engaged to boyfriend Eric Johnson

On Sunday, Jessica Simpson announced her engagement Eric Johnson, just two weeks after Simpson ex Nick Lachey popped the question to girlfriend Vanessa Minnillo.
Simpson and Lachey were reality TV pioneers. Their MTV show "Newlyweds" chronicled their often dippy home life on MTV from 2003 to 2005. The two divorced in 2005, after just three seasons.
Simpson, 30, met Johnson -- a vegan former NFL player last May. Five months later, according to Us Weekly, his divorce from an estranged wife was final and Simpson began tweeting treacly messages about her new love.
The pair has yet to announce a wedding date.

Only Daughter Found Alive in Ohio Family

A 13-year-old Ohio girl who was reported missing along with her two members of family and a friend last week was found alive Sunday in a home 10 miles from where she was last seen.
A SWAT team found Sarah Maynard in the basement of 30-year-old Matthew Hoffman's Mount Vernon, Ohio home, Knox County Sheriff David Barber said at a news conference Sunday.
Barber said Sarah was bound and gagged but alive.
"We were hopeful of finding more than one" of the missing people in Hoffman's house, Barber said Sunday. "But the information we had was that Sarah would definitely be found in that house."
Barber said Sarah is currently in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She has been interviewed but the details were not released.
Authorities arrested Hoffman on kidnapping charges. Additional charges are expected to be filed and a court hearing is set for today.
Police believe Sarah was "under Hoffman's control" since her disappearance last Wednesday.
But there's still no sign of her 10-year-old brother Kody, their mother, 32-year-old Tina Hermann, and friend 41-year-old Stephanie Sprang.

AIADMK says Arrest Raja for biggest scam in history

Chennai, Nov 15: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief Jayalalithaa demanded the arrest of A Raja, who resigned the post of Union Telecom Minister on Sunday, Nov 14, for his involvement in 2G spectrum scam.

Jayalalithaa, the leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, asked for Raja's arrest through a press statement issued on Monday, Nov 15. She described 2G spectrum scam as the biggest scam in the history of mankind.

"This overdue resignation is not a case of scaling the moral high ground. Raja had been mocking at all constitutional institutions including the office of the prime minister," Jayalalithaa said in the statement.

Jayalalithaa told that Raja, Karunanidhi family and some other people close to Raja have gained from the scam. She called for arrest of Raja under Prevention of Corruption Act.

"Raja himself should be charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act and should be arrested and tried for perpetrating the biggest scam in the history of mankind," she added.

Deadly blaze rips through Shanghai skyscraper

Flames engulfed a high-rise apartment building in Shanghai on Monday, killing at least 12 people, injuring more than 90 and forcing some residents to jump from their windows to escape, according to reports.
The building in the Jing'an District of the Chinese city was being renovated when a fire broke out at 2 p.m. local time (1 a.m. ET), the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.
Xinhua said the flames quickly spread from scaffolding to the skyscraper. The building housed many retired teachers, Xinhua added.
The fire appeared to have been put out about six hours later, and firefighters could be seen removing bodies from the building.
Citing hospital officials, Shanghai Daily tweeted that 12 people had died and about 50 others were injured. Shanghai Daily said that about 90 people had been rescued from the site.
A firefighter told The Associated Press that people were still trapped in the building, but he did not know how many. He would not give his name, as is common with Chinese officials.

'The glass of the windows was scalding' Survivor Li Xiuyun, 61, told the AFP news service that she, her husband, son and a granddaughter had fled from their home on the 16th floor.
"The smoke was very strong and the glass of the windows was scalding," she told AFP. "My son took off his socks and soaked them with water, and we used them to cover our noses. I stumbled on people on the floor when walking."
A building resident identified as Mr. Zhou told Hong Kong broadcaster Phoenix TV that he and his wife were napping in their 23rd floor apartment when they smelled smoke.
He said they climbed down the scaffolding four stories before being rescued by firefighters.
At one point helicopters could be seen hovering over the building, and witnesses said at least one resident was rescued by a helicopter, but thick smoke hampered further efforts. By evening the helicopters were gone.
More than 80 fire trucks and hundreds of firefighters were called to battle the blaze, Shanghai state television said, and streams of water could be seen flowing into the building, which appeared to be gutted.

State-run website Eastday.com cited a construction worker surnamed Qian who escaped from the 28th story as saying crews were installing energy-saving insulation when the fire occurred.
Qian said she was working when thick, rolling smoke clouds surrounded the building and the room she was in filled up with smoke, making it difficult to breathe.
Qian said she called the city's emergency hotline and then used a wet towel to cover her mouth and nose as she ran down a fire escape.

Apple company Releases iTunes 10.1

Apple has upgraded iTunes in preparation for the release of a new version of iOS for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

iTunes 10.1, released Friday, syncs the digital media player application with iOS 4.2, which Apple hasn't released, reportedly due to technical problems related to the iPad. In addition, the new version of iTunes includes AirPlay support to wirelessly stream video from iTunes to Apple TV, which the company sells as a bridge between the Internet and the digital TV in the home.
Other advantages of iTunes 10.1 include a number of "important stability and performance improvements," Apple says.

Nevertheless, those who install the iTunes upgrade will not reap all its benefits until Apple gets iOS 4.2 out. According to numerous postings on the discussion forums of Apple and the blog MacRumors.com, developers have found serious problems with Wi-Fi performance on iPads with a pre-release version of iOS 4.2 installed.
According to the postings, Wi-Fi connections on iPads with the so-called Golden Master of iOS 4.2 installed drop off after only a few minutes. The problem has been reported to Apple, but the company has yet to publicly address it.
Apple released the Golden Master of iOS 4.2 Nov. 1, which led industry observers to predict a mid-November release. However, Apple has stuck by its usual approach to iPhone and iPad software updates and has not offered a specific date for the update.
With the release of iTunes 10.1, Apple could be within days of releasing the iOS update. That's because the later upgrade was expected to follow the iTunes update. Among the many features included in iOS 4.2 is the ability to print from the iPad over a Wi-Fi connection.

Hangover 2: Bill Clinton Films Appearance

Mel Gibson might be out, but "The Hangover 2" just got another major cameo in the bag.
According to the People magazine, former President Bill Clinton will play himself in the sequel to last year's blockbuster comedy, currently filming in Thailand. While Clinton was in the region giving speeches on clean energy and meeting world leaders, he dropped in and shot a brief appearance in the Todd Phillips-directed film. There's no word on what the scene involving the 41st U.S. president is about, but Clinton joins the likes of Mike Tyson, whose Phil Collins-crooning cameo in the first film became one of its most memorable scenes.
Gibson was dropped from the film and replaced by Liam Neeson, who will be joined by another esteemed actor on the cast, which includes Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha and "Real World: San Diego" alum Jamie Chung. Deadline Hollywood reported that Paul Giamatti has signed on to join the cast in Thailand as well. Details are also scarce on what role the "John Adams" star will be playing in the film.
The new cast faces could help finally put the Gibson controversy to rest. The troubled actor, whose career has been put in deep freeze in the wake of a series of leaked profanity-laced recordings that allegedly featured his voice, was dropped from the movie last month, shortly after the news of his cameo as a tattoo artist was leaked.
"Regret is the wrong word, but I was surprised in some way by the reaction," Phillips told MTV News earlier this month of the response to Gibson's casting and replacement. "I think in that community in Hollywood, we've often seen — and I certainly have empathy for people that have struggled, whether it's alcohol addiction in [Gibson's] case or whatever it may be, there is empathy. I was a little bit surprised by people, and I'm not even talking about our family, the 'Hangover' family. I'm talking about the outside world's sort of lack of empathy."
Though Galifianakis was rumored to be one of the "family" members who objected to the Gibson cameo, he told the "Today" show that he had nothing to do with the actor's replacement. "I do not consult on the movies that I'm in. I just show up and I say my lines, usually terribly, and I do consult on dialogue," he explained on the morning show. "But as far as hiring and firing of actors, I have no insight into that world whatsoever."

he's not caving on tax cuts: says OBAMA

Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- President Obama declared Friday that his "No. 1 priority" is preserving tax cuts for the middle class, and sharply denied that comments by his senior adviser David Axelrod suggest that his administration is about to cave in to Republicans who also want to extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.
"That is the wrong interpretation because I haven't had a conversation with Democratic and Republican leaders," Obama said of a Huffington Post article suggesting that in advance of negotiations with lawmakers next week, the White House has calculated that giving in on tax cuts for the rich is the only way to get the middle class cuts extended too.
"Here's the right interpretation -- I want to make sure that taxes don't go up for middle class families starting on January 1," Obama said at a news conference at the conclusion of the G-20 Summit in South Korea. "That is my No. 1 priority for those families and for our economy. I also believe that it would be fiscally irresponsible for us to permanently extend the high income tax cuts.
"I think that would be a mistake, particularly when we've got our Republican friends saying that their No. 1 priority is making sure that we are dealing with our debt and our deficit," he said.
Obama: 'Global economy is growing again'
How to balance the budget?
U.S. on defensive at G-20
Obama would not tip his hand on the discussions coming when Congress returns to work for a lame-duck session next week.
"I'm not going to negotiate here in Seoul, my job is to negotiate back in Washington with Democratic and Republican leaders," he said.
The president also seemed to give outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi an unofficial but tacit endorsement in her bid to remain in the Democratic leadership as House minority leader.
Asked by a reporter whether he believes fellow Democrats in Congress should get some "new blood," Obama praised Pelosi as a "terrific partner" despite some conservative Democrats in Washington griping that she should not stay in power.
"I think what we will naturally see is a whole bunch of talented people rise to the top as they promote good ideas that attract the American people in terms of jobs and investment and how to grow the economy," Obama said. "I think Speaker Pelosi has been a terrific partner for me" and the White House's agenda.
Obama seemed to be suggesting the party should stay the course by then thanking Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) by name as well before concluding, "I'm looking forward to working with the entire leadership team" on behalf of the American people.
For the second straight day, Obama also commented on his debt commission, chaired by Democrat Erskine Bowles and Republican Alan Simpson, which released highly-controversial preliminary findings urging major overhauls of programs like Social Security.
"I'm going to study those carefully, consult widely and see what we can do on the spending side" to make a dent in the deficit, Obama said.
"That is going to be a series of tough conversations," he said of the spending cuts to come.
Obama, who is now wrapping up his 9-day tour of Asia with a final stop in Japan for the APEC economic summit, left Seoul empty-handed on a bilateral trade agreement with South Korea.
The deal bogged because of disputes over whether U.S. beef and U.S. automakers will get a fair crack at the Korean market and its failure to be completed in the region is a blow to Obama, but the president vowed that he will not be rushed into signing off on a deal that doesn't make sense for the U.S. economy.
"Do we have a deal that works for us? That is my first obligation," said Obama. "It was important to take the extra time so that I am assured" that it will be a success for American workers.
"I'm the one who has to go and sell it to Congress," Obama said in reference to the fact that while business groups are lobbying hard for the deal, organized labor has expressed deep reservations, imperiling ratification down the road even if the administration can clear the first hurdle.
Pressed on the slow pace of the U.S. economic recovery and whether he can promise that Americans will feel noticeable job growth during his first four-year term, Obama noted his administration has had 10 consecutive months of private sector job growth but added that he doesn't have a "crystal ball" about the months ahead.
However, he noted that job growth "needs to be speeded up" and he believes his policies will set the right conditions for a turnaround.
"We can chip away at the unemployment rate so that we get back to the kinds of levels that reflect a growing middle class and increased opportunity for all people," he said.
Asked by a reporter if the midterm election has weakened him on the global stage, the president said simply "No" and made the case for a broad communique the G-20 leaders signed on to at the conclusion of the summit.
The major points of the agreement included the leaders promising to continue focusing on economic growth, trying to correct trade imbalances and high debt, and press forward on financial regulatory reforms to help prevent another financial crisis.
That final agreement, however, kicked the can down the road to next year on finding solutions to fix some of these economic balances so the leaders left here with questions hanging over the summit about whether the promises made have real teeth.
For example on one of the most divisive issues, currency manipulation, China was able broaden that section of the agreement beyond just exchange rates. That forced Obama to simply vow "we will closely watch the appreciation of China's currency," rather than being able to promise specific action.
Ever since he rode into London for his first G-20 Summit as a conquering hero in April 2009, Obama has been dealing with high expectations on the world stage.
At that summit nearly two years ago, with fears of a Great Depression hanging in the air, much of the media coverage focused on whether the charismatic new U.S. president could almost single-handedly save the world's 20 largest economies in a single bound.
It was only after Obama and a series of other leaders did some scrambling that they could finally come to an agreement on a $1 trillion framework to help stimulate the global economy and better police its markets.
Little wonder then that at the 2009 summit's farewell news conference, Obama fended off questions about his own clout by stressing that the world has changed dramatically since the U.S. and Great Britain remade the world's economy on their own in 1944 at Bretton Woods.
"If there's just Roosevelt and Churchill sitting in a room with a brandy, that's an easier negotiation," Obama said then. "But that's not the world we live in, and it shouldn't be the world that we live in."
"It's an appreciation that, you know, Europe is now rebuilt and a powerhouse,'' Obama said then. "Japan is rebuilt, is a powerhouse. China, India, these are all countries on the move. And that's good. That means there are millions of people -- billions of people who are working their way out of poverty. And over time, that potentially makes this a much more peaceful world.''
On Friday in Seoul, Obama defended the work of the G-20 by allowing that "instead of hitting home runs" sometimes leaders have to settle for "hitting singles" that are still quite impressive.
As for his own standing on the world stage and his alliances with specific leaders, Obama said, "my relationships have grown much stronger" over time.
Obama also dismissed the notion that diplomacy has grown more difficult for him with his approval ratings dropping back home in recent months, noting that it was not easy when he was "at 65 percent in the polls" early in his presidency.
"It was hard then, it's hard now," Obama said.

'I and Sanjay communicate without words'

After hits like Jodhaa Akbar and Sarkar Raj two years ago, she was missing from the cinemas last year. Discounting her Hollywood film, The Pink Panther 2, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has more than made up for her absence with four releases (including Raavan in Tamil)
this year. And needless to say, she is optimistic about ending 2010 on a high note with the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed film, Guzaarish, that also stars Hrithik Roshan.

“I was too busy working on such diverse films. As an actor, I’m glad I had a chance to explore various characters in different genres,” Aishwarya says. Ask her about the most fascinating part of working in Guzaarish and she says that she can’t pinpoint just one. Having worked with the filmmaker previously for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas, she concedes that she can’t summarise the experience of working with Bhansali in a few words.“Whether it’s the relationship between the characters or the music and dance… Sanjay brings something new that you need to go the theatre to enjoy and experience,” she says, adding, “When you see too many promos of a film, you feel as if you know the story. But when you watch Guzaarish, you’ll realise that you can’t predict what happens next.”

The actor asserts that she and Bhansali can communicate without even exchanging words. “If there’s something I’m not sure of, then I’d just look at Sanjay and he’d understand what I meant. Once, a pillow didn’t seem to fit into the frame, and I re-arranged it. People in the unit wondered how a pillow’s placement mattered, but Sanjay understood why,” she explains, reiterating that she and her director buddy saw the film in their minds and “knew when the magical moment would happen.”

And how did Roshan handle his heroine and director’s understanding, considering he himself is known to be pretty meticulous about every role? Aishwarya replies that she was the common link between the director and her hero, having worked with the latter in two films. “We have our tuning since Dhoom 2, our first film together. We had to pose a lot for the camera and it wasn’t easy delivering in every frame,” she explains, recalling that Shah Rukh Khan was surprised at how she and Bhansali connected during Devdas.

Aishwarya insists that if Roshan had to put in immense effort to play a quadriplegic in Guzaarish, portraying the caring nurse Sofia was no easy feat either. “Working on a subject so intense, we’d feel drained by the end of the day’s shoot,” she admits.

And like her hero who plays a quadriplegic who has been bed-ridden for 14 years, Aishwarya too interacted with people who suffered from the ailment. “We learnt to treasure life, reality, the moments, the blessings and to be thankful for all the love we receive from people… and that goes beyond blood relations,” she signs off.

Rumours surround Suu Kyi's release

People are gathering at the National League for Democracy (NLD) headquarters in Rangoon amid rumours that detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will soon be released.
There is speculation the democracy icon will walk free from house arrest tonight.
NLD sources say junta leader Than Shwe has signed the order for her release and that she has received the paperwork in her home.
However her lawyer says he has not been formally notified.
Security has been stepped up in Rangoon, with police vehicles patrolling the city.
Party supporters have been cleaning up the office and placing banners of the Nobel laureate who has spent much of the past 20 years under house arrest.
She was released briefly in 2002 but was detained again in 2003.
Nervous excitement is building in Burma only a week after the first election since she and her party won in a landslide 20 years ago but were not allowed to take office.
Adding to the anticipation, the superstitious people of Burma believe it is an auspicious day, given the date of 12/11/10.
"She has already signed some paperwork about her detention (in the) past 18 months," said Nyo Ohn Myint, a spokesman for the NLD.
"And then also the social branch and local authorities are being at her residence. I think people are very nervous and very excited about her release.
"Hundreds of the NLD members are right now gathering at the NLD headquarters."
Some observers believe her release could come with restrictions to ensure she cannot threaten the generals' hold on power.
Ms Suu Kyi has said she would not accept a conditional release.

Indonesian media assess Obama visit

The Indonesian media have on the whole responded positively to the visit of US President Barack Obama.
Several media outlets hailed the significance of the visit and felt it was likely to benefit both countries. Others stressed that for Indonesia to benefit, any resulting partnership between the two countries would have to be an equal one.

Editorial in Republika

Obama's two-day visit to Indonesia is significant for both countries amidst the increasingly strong regionalism and new world giants.

Editorial in Suara Karya

If the comprehensive partnership between Indonesia and the United States becomes a reality, we are sure that it will benefit the people of both countries.

Ivan A. Hadar in Seputar Indonesia

The Indonesian government must stress that the partnership agreement must be based on the principle of equality.

Editorial in Sinar Indonesia Baru

Obama's presence should never divide this nation, and we must be able to learn wisdom from his visit. This nation must be broad-minded. The interest of our nation, particularly in the world political and economic arena, must be maintained responsibly.

Editorial in Seputar Indonesia

The comprehensive partnership offered by the Obama administration must be used as much as possible to benefit Indonesia and the United States… Sensitive issues which have so far been obstacles, such as human rights, the Papua issue, the Palestine issue and terrorism, must be prioritised in the comprehensive partnership.

Editorial in Koran Tempo

No matter how short the visit is, the government should try to draw as much benefit from it as possible. With relations that are neither too close nor too loose with the United States, our country will be freer to work together with many countries... The key is still the ability of the government to draw benefit from the bilateral relationship and not just to accept America's agenda.

Tempo Interaktif news website

This visit is expected to boost relations between the two countries because international stability will depend on everlasting relations between Islam and the Western world.

Sara-Ali commited with Bigg Boss

Sara Khan and Ali Merchant will have a royal wedding in Bigg Boss house. None other than India’s top fashion designer Vikram Phadnis has been chosen to design exquisite clothes for the couple.

The duo, who have been dating each other for last three years, will no doubt be delighted to have such an honour. And how about Phadnis? Well, given the platform on Bigg Boss, which has its own cult following, Phadnis couldn’t be any more happier either.

The designer is trying to recreate the splendour the Pink City of India, Jaipur, known for its royally traditional kundans and polkis. Phadnis are of the opinion that this would be best for the pretty lass.

While Sara will look resplendent in a lehenga, complete with bridal motifs and Phadnis’ trademark style, Ali’s not going to lag behind on the glam quotient. Vikram said that the groom is going to be decked up in a sherwani, which will have real gold thread embroidery.

And we think this is going to work wonders for the show’s TRPs. But then, for any other upcoming reality shows, we are sure Bigg Boss 4 will set high trends to catch up to!

ICC offer Haider helped By PCB

Expressing concerns over wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider deserting Pakistan team in the midst of an ODI series following death threats for refusing to fix matches, International Cricket Council has offered to help the PCB in its investigation into the matter, besides advising the player to approach it.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said the world body is in "regular touch" with the PCB since Haider fled from his team hotel in Dubai to London.

"ICC today confirmed that it is in regular communication with the Pakistan Cricket Board and has offered to support the PCB in its current investigations into the reasons behind wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider's decision to leave the Pakistan team on the morning of the final ODI against South Africa in Dubai," Lorgat said in a statement.

Lorgat also offered help Haider but said it could only be done if the player approaches the world body.

"Clearly this is in the first instance a team matter for Pakistan cricket but the ICC is willing to provide assistance to the PCB and the player," Lorgat said.

"We understand his plight if reports are indeed true, but we can only help him if he is willing to engage with us. At this stage, the ICC does not intend to make any further comment," he said in the statement.

The 24-year-old Haider, who has played just one Test, four ODIs and three Twenty20 Internationals, announced his retirement from international cricket only three months after making his debut. And now he has sought political asylum in England after dramatically deserting his team on the day of the fifth and final ODI against South Africa.

Haider said he received a message asking him to be a part of a match-fixing conspiracy ahead of the fourth one-dayer but refused to reveal the identity of the person who approached him.

"I was approached by one person who asked me to fix the fourth and fifth match. He also said there would be problem for me if I did not do it," Haider said.

Haider, who sought political asylum in the United Kingdom, was questioned in London by the Scotland Yard and ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit.
